How We Began
Hello. I’m Jeff Stevens, founder of Sports Market Builders. Several people have asked me how I developed my enthusiasm for fundraising. As I reflect back, it all started when I participated in my first little league fundraiser…
Our coach asked us to sell tickets to help the team raise money to attend a Minnesota Twins game. He also developed the first incentive program that I was determined to win. Needless to say, I won the prize for selling the most tickets. The prize was a wood bat and a ball that I still have today. Yes, after my first successful fundraiser, I was hooked.
At a young age, I learned the power of working with the community and small businesses to achieve our team’s goals. I turned my passion and involvement in athletic programs into my life’s work. Through Sports Market Builders, I combine my passion for sports with my desire to help schools and organizations succeed while strengthening their community.
Gone are the days when sports marketing was easy, fun and profitable.
Times are hard. Families and local businesses are struggling to pay their expenses. As much as they want to support their schools and community, making ends meet has become their priority. Where they once contributed to school and nonprofit programs through donations, buying products, sponsorships and advertising, these optional expenses have largely been replaced by the need to pay for basic necessities.
The lack of funding for sports and other school and nonprofit programs affects families, students and communities. Students were once able to have their athletic, band and club expenses met through programs supported by fundraisers. This puts more pressure on struggling families. Now many students cannot afford to participate. Some programs have closed due to lack of funding.
Traditionally and still today, fundraising is largely achieved though advertising and sponsorships of various athletic, band and club programs in which the sponsor receives exposure through printed materials, banners, editorials, coupon books and contests, to name a few.
Besides exposure and feeling good knowing they are contributing to a worthy cause, traditional fundraising does not provide businesses with a measurable return on their investment.
Economic declines have changed fundraising from what it was in the past. Once an activity that was enjoyable, relatively easy and profitable, fundraising has become a stressful chore for athletic directors, coaches, teachers and organizations.
After years of working with schools, nonprofits and families, I knew I had to find a way to turn this around. Through my expertise in sports marketing and analysis of these problems, I realized that the solutions would actually produce a much stronger outcome for schools and nonprofits. But it involved a new way of thinking.
The solutions provide school athletic programs and nonprofits with sustainable funds without stress and worry. They provide a source of funding for programs that take the financial stress off families. They give students opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities that benefit their growth. In the process, these solutions bring together and strengthen the entire community.
We know that a strong local business community is vital for supporting the programs of schools and nonprofits. By working together with local businesses and structuring fundraising to help them succeed, it will create a win win. There is where schools and nonprofits will never have to worry again about funding their programs.
These creative fundraising and sponsorship strategies are designed to help local business thrive while being highly profitable for schools and nonprofits. Best of all, our unique creative fundraising and sponsorship strategies have minimal or no risk at all.
